چکیده

Usually transport-chemistry models are solved by operator-splitting methods where the chemistry and the vertical transport processes are integrated in a coupled way by implicit methods of order two or higher with automatic error control. In mesoscale applications the integration intervals are relatively short and small initial transients occur for the chemistry-diffusion operator which are an artefact of the operator-splitting approach. Integration methods with error control are quite sensitive to this initial transients which results in rather small step sizes to start up the integration. However to take into account effectively changes inside the chemistry-diffusion process (sunset, sunrise, change of the mixing height) an error control is held indispensible.

Solving vertical transport and chemistry in air pollution models

For the time integration of stii transport-chemistry problems from air pollution modelling, standard ODE solvers are not feasible due to the large number of species and the 3D nature. The popular alternative, standard operator splitting, introduces artiicial transients for short-lived species. This complicates the chemistry solution, easily causing large errors for such species. In the framewor...

On the Efficient Treatment of Vertical Mixing and Chemistry in Air Pollution Modelling

Reaction-Advection-Diffusion problems occurring in Air Pollution Models have very stiff reaction terms and moderately stiff vertical mixing (diffusion and cloud transport) terms which both should be integrated implicitly in time. Standard implicit time stepping is by far too expensive for this type of problems whereas widely used splitting techniques may lead to unacceptably large errors for fa...

Testing Weighted Splitting Schemes on a One-Column Transport-Chemistry Model

In many transport-chemistry models, a huge system of ODE's of the advection-diffusion-reaction type has to be integrated in time. Typically, this is done with the help of operator splitting. Operator splitting is attractive for complex large-scale transport-chemistry models because it allows to handle different processes separately in different parts of the computer program. Rosenbrock schemes ...

Exploiting ISAT to solve the reaction–diffusion equation

We develop and demonstrate a computationally efficient numerical splitting technique for solving the reaction–diffusion equation. The scheme is based on the Strang splitting technique wherein the portions of the governing equations containing stiff chemical reaction terms are separated from those parts containing the less-stiff transport terms. As demonstrated, the scheme achieves second-order ...

A New Implicit Dissipation Term for Solving 3D Euler Equations on Unstructured Grids by GMRES+LU-SGS Scheme

Due to improvements in computational resources, interest has recently increased in using implicit scheme for solving flow equations on 3D unstructured grids. However, most of the implicit schemes produce greater numerical diffusion error than their corresponding explicit schemes. This stems from the fact that in linearizing implicit fluxes, it is conventional to replace the Jacobian matrix in t...
